Mandala Apparels is an organic garment and accessories manufacturing social enterprise following fair trade principles. The company manufactures various organic cotton based woven and knitted products such as men's wear, women's wear, kids wear, accessories and home furnishings. Its business model is based on partnerships with all the stakeholders across the value chain –from sourcing (farmers) to end consumers to ensure sustainability and transparency in every process.
The company operates 80% of its production unit with women employees. Further, the waste generated during the production process is reused/recycled according to its nature. For instance, the company has partnered with a Delhi-based NGO to recycle its large waste clothes to sanitary napkins.
The enterprise was started by Anjali Schiavina in 2002 with 8 handloom weavers. In 2013, the company expanded to 130 machines and 195 employees. In 2016, the company opened a new factory with additional capacity of 200 machines. The company has also received equity investment from Aavishkaar to accelerate growth as well as its social impact.
The company works with strategic partners to ensure implementation of sustainable production and cultivation practices, economic and social women empowerment, and training unskilled and semi-skilled women to create job opportunities in the company, The company's ISO 9001:2008 certified processes ensure a 100 per cent quality check, which is carried out across all parameters such as fabric strength, colour fastness and shrinkage before the fabric is approved for production.
The company has been certified by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), a leading standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria. It has also received certifications from FLOCERT, a global certification and verification body for Fairtrade principles, WFTO, the largest global network of Fair Trade Organisations representing the entire supply chain and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 for testing harmful substances.
