The overall impact on the environment by a textile product or process may be best assessed by life cycle assessment (LCA) which is a systematic scientific approach to examine the environmental impacts of the entire life cycle of a product or service.

The document presents an overview of different processes that enable garments to be used by a consumer. It applies LCA and life cycle inventory analysis methods in the areas where sustainability has potential in the textile industry such as use of toxic chemicals, consumption of energy and water, waste generation, air emissions, transportation, and pacakaging materials used.

In each of the sections, the author presents scope for improvement and way forward for a textile professional to apply sustainable technologies, chemicals and processes.
