The concept of carbon credits has come into existence as a result of increasing awareness of the need for controlling emissions. These credits are measured in units of Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). Carbon Credit is a type of a tradable greenhouse gas emission reduction unit. The Credits can be divided into two parts - Carbon Offset Credits and Carbon Reduction Credits.

The document provides an overview of the different international organisations involved in carbon offsetting, the differences in definitions of tools used and also highlights how Indian apparel organizations such as Sree Santhosh Group Companies, Jaya Shree Textiles, Gupta Exim and Renuga Textile are already pursuing carbon emission inventory projects in preparation for future carbon mitigation.
