More than 1900 chemicals are used in apparel production, of which over 165 are classified by EU as hazardous to health or environment (EU Parliamentary Research Service, 2019).

While one would like to use very few chemicals in apparel production, it is quite idealistic. However, the classification of 165 chemicals as hazardous gives the textile industry a good place to start - and that would be by focussing on eliminating these 165 chemicals, which is less than 4% of the total number of textile chemicals used.

But difficult will it be to eliminate them? We reckon that would depend on what those chemicals are, and the sustainable alternatives available as their replacement.
