This review article shares emerging research inputs on the performance of hemp fibres and their innovative applications. The objective is to enhance the use of hemp as natural fibres in textile applications.
Hemp can be grown in any land area such as hills, slopes, salt lands and more and use of crop rotation effectively minimizes pest attack, thus reducing the need for chemicals as well as related costs involved. It is soft, breathable, has high moisture absorption efficiency, thus offering a cooling effect for the wearer. True hemp variety called Cannabis has several cultivation and performance advantages compared to other varieties.
Owing to its improved properties, hemp could be used in military applications, development of civil textiles, manufacturing knitted fabrics and T-shirts, denim and more. The study concludes that hemp has excellent performance properties compared to many other fibres and thus could find place in niche, high performance applications such as in making artificial blood vessels in China.
