Sustainable use of nanomaterials in textiles and their environmental impact - a review

This review article discusses the emerging advanced applications of nanomaterials in textiles and their associated health and environmental impacts.

Four key textile fields using nano - materials, coatings, fibres, finishing, composites are analysed. Different functional textiles with nanomaterials are also briefly reviewed. It discusses various advantages of nanotechnology including water repellent properties, anti-odour, antimicrobial and more. Details on their environmental and health associated risks are provided with reference from case studies followed by different approaches to assess the toxicity nature of nanomaterials.

The article concludes that more research is needed in the selection of safe nanomaterials by the textile industries and policy interventions are required to regulate the disposal of nanomaterials containing textile wastewaters.
