Textile recycling processes - current status and emerging developments

This review article provides an overview of current recycling methods in the textile industry. Details on emerging technologies with a special emphasis on biochemical fibre recycling processes are provided.

Key recycling methods discussed include textile recycling for other applications such as paper, fibre recovery methods, fibre respinning, fibre feedstock recycling, pyrolysis and more. An emerging technology is enzyme recycling or biochemical recycling, where different types of enzymes are involved for breakdown of fibres according to the fibre type. Details on a few projects working in the biochemical recycling area are provided.

The study concludes that at each stakeholder level - brands, technologists, policy makers, suitable interventions need to be made to enable textile recycling and build a circular economy model.
