National multi stakeholder initiatives for apparel industries in Germany and Netherlands - a review

This article shares insights on some of the national multi stakeholder initiatives developed in Germany and Netherlands to improve social and environmental conditions along the entire supply chain. Two initiatives are discussed - The German Partnership for Sustainable Textiles and Dutch Agreement on Sustainable Garments and Textile (AGT).

It discusses the origin and setting up of these initiatives, general comparisons of both the initiatives on their role towards a sustainable fashion ecosystem. It also highlights the role of the government in collaborating with MSIs to enable companies to implement sustainable measures.

Market share data for both the initiatives in terms of brand collaborations, challenges, opportunities and developments in implementing sustainable measures in apparel and textile are also discussed. The initiatives have also plans to collaborate with other countries in Europe and state that collaboration with the EU would play a major role in transforming the sustainability of the European fashion ecosystem.
