Sustainable apparel sector in Germany - a review of German development policy

This article discusses some of the initiatives taken by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in Germany in building a sustainable apparel ecosystem.

It provides a background of the current working conditions in global textile industries in terms of pay, workers’ health, safety and environmental standards and trade unions. It then discusses the efforts taken by BMZ or the Federal Ministry, for building a sustainable ecosystem such as through partnerships, support for international organizations, dialogue with partner countries, cooperation with private sectors and civil society and consumer education.

It concludes by providing some guidance to sustainable apparel buyers to make responsible purchasing decisions for developing a sustainable fashion industry.
