Zero liquid discharge in Indian textile industries - cost effective methods and resource nexus

The concept of resource nexus denotes the interconnections between the uses of natural resources - its consumption, waste and governance. 

This case study analyses the multiple effects of various energy efficient processes being implemented in five textile inudstries inTamil Nadu to reduce the cost incurred due to implementation of Zero Liquid discharge (ZLD). Key industry stakeholder perspectives on the same have also been provided. A multiple effects framework is also developed based on the data for implementation in similar industries.

The study involved detailed survey and semi-structured interviews with the suppliers and sub-suppliers of IKEA to understand their cost-effective energy efficient measures during transition to ZLD. Quantitative and qualitative data analysis was carried out. Results showed that more research on the multiple effects framework being developed by the participating companies / institutes would be required to integrate this into industrial decision making and investment by large brands in the related textile mills could play a key role towards implementing ZLD.
