Role of business intelligence in textile sector in the era of industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 is a new era of industrial revolution in which textile and apparel (T&A) companies are adopting and integrating advanced technologies to achieve sustainability and a competitive edge.

The current study is one of the first to investigate the determinants of business intelligence systems (BIS) adoption with an objective towards understanding how BIS can resolve sustainability issues in T&A companies with Industry 4.0 technologies. Details on case studies on the successful adoption of business intelligence systems are also provided.

The study was conducted through a qualitative research approach with 14 semi-structured detailed interviews with 12 prominent textile and apparel companies. Only those companies who have already adopted the BIS or are ready to adopt them were selected. Results showed that retail companies are keen on adopting industry 4.0 technologies compared to only textile companies. The study concludes that adoption of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, 3D technology, etc. in textile and apparel industry is still in nascent stages and more research would be required to understand their contribution to sustainability.
